Sparta
Sparta was laid out by Isaac Spencer and R.I Dawson in 1836. The Historian says that 236 lots were laid off into blocks of 12 lots each. The plat in the Recorder's Office shows eighty blocks. The population never exceeded 25 people at any one time. Several lots were donated by the promoters for School and Church purposes, and for a Public Square. Growth was not as rapid as the promoters hoped. A Post Office was established 7 July 1836, two months after the site was selected, and one month after it was platted. Isaac Spencer was the first Postmaster. The office struggled along until Auqust 25, 1841, when it was discontinued.
The first County Seat of Noble County was fixed at Sparta early in May 1836, and a small building was erected for public offices, but the honor was of short duration, for in July 1837, the County Seat was moved to Augusta.
Although this Village was the County Seat, no court house or jail was ever built. The few residents of Sparta got out as rapidly as they could after losing the County Seat, and Sparta became deserted.
